Academic Performance in Public Secondary Schools in Kenya: A Critical Review of Job Satisfaction and Other Influential Factors
Synopsis
This book analyses the relationship between teachers’ job satisfaction, employment factors and academic performance among secondary schools. The study makes reference to Homa-Bay County which was the area of focus to generalize the findings. The authors make use of descriptive survey and correlation research designs in establishing the relationships between variables. Findings indicate that most teachers are not satisfied with their teaching profession as signified by low job satisfaction indices. It is evident that recognition by management, working age, salary and allowance are factors which influence teachers’ job satisfaction and their absence accounts for poor retention of teachers in the County. The authors recommend that the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology reviews teachers’ salary upward, puts in place proper recognition mechanisms of teachers and evaluates working age. This book is an important contribution to the realization of Kenya Vision 2030.
