Synopsis

There is paucity of literature and data on mineral resource development and management in Kenya. This is due to the fact that Kenya has traditionally been viewed as a country which is poorly endowed with valuable mineral resources. However, with the discovery of crude oil in Ngamia One in Turkana County by Tullow Oil Mining Company, Kenya is set to join the league of oil producing nations. In Africa, it is believed that the discovery of valuable minerals such as oil and subsequent prospecting is not a blessing but a “curse”, as it has become a source of conflicts and schisms as seen in countries such as Sudan, Angola and DRC Congo. It is also notable that Environmental issues are either ignored or given less emphasis when it comes to extraction of minerals in Africa. This book provides insights on how to strike a balance between the benefits accrued from mineral resource development and Environmental protection with reference to Fluorspar mining in Kerio Valley in Kenya. The contents of the book are multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, and are recommended for students, practitioners, academicians and other scholars interested in the fields of Mining, Environmental Science, Mineral and Mineral Mining Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies, Urban and Regional Planning, Physical Planning, Geography, Geology and Geomorphology.
