Before You Say I Do: A Social Biblical Lens of Love and Marriage
Synopsis
The trend of divorce among the African population, particularly youth, has expanded in recent years, leading to detrimental consequences for the traditional family unit. In South Africa, this trend is not exempt from the impact of the scourge, as indicated by the census SA 2022. The census figures show a marked rise in the percentage of individuals who have never been married from 31.8% in 2011 to 40% in 2022, an increase of 8.2 percentage points. In contrast, the number of legally married people decreased during the same period, from 29.9% in 2011 to 24% in 2022. The Black African population exhibits the highest percentage of never-married individuals and the lowest proportion of legally married individuals in the country. These statistics suggest that traditional marriage is under threat as an increasing number of people opt to remain single, and divorce rates continue to rise. With its practical and useful guide, this book is designed to assist youth in making wise choices when selecting partners for marriage. This resource is invaluable for pastors and counsellors who prepare couples for marriage and support those experiencing marital difficulties. It is also highly relevant to scholars in social sciences, including theology, sociology, social work, and youth studies. We believe this initiative will build strong marriages and restore family units.
